**Delhi to Test ‘Smog-Eating’ Coatings on City Infrastructure**

The Delhi government has initiated a feasibility study to deploy innovative “smog-eating” coatings across the city’s infrastructure. This cutting-edge initiative aims to combat hazardous air pollutants through a scientific and technology-driven approach, potentially offering a new tool in the fight against Delhi’s persistent air pollution challenges.
**Exploring Photocatalytic Surfaces**
Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa announced that the government is examining the use of photocatalytic surfaces embedded with titanium dioxide. These coatings can be applied to roads, pavements, and public spaces to break down harmful pollutants. Known for being low-cost, chemically stable, and compatible with traditional construction materials, titanium dioxide has emerged as a promising candidate for large-scale urban application.
**Evaluation Process Underway**
To kick-start the project, the Environment Department will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a renowned scientific institution within the next 30 days. This agreement will initiate a six-month period of field trials and evaluation to assess the effectiveness of the technology.
Throughout this period, the department will provide monthly progress updates. At the end of the study, a comprehensive report detailing the findings will be submitted, helping guide future decisions.
**Measuring Pollution Reduction and Sustainability**
The study will focus on how effectively the “smog-eating” coatings reduce harmful pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide and hydrocarbons. Alongside pollution mitigation, researchers will assess cost-effectiveness, safety, and long-term sustainability of the coatings.
Minister Sirsa emphasized that this initiative represents a practical step toward achieving tangible results for Delhi’s residents. “We are putting simple, safe, science-based tools on the ground and measuring results openly,” he said.
**Potential for Citywide Expansion**
Should the study yield positive results, the government plans to propose rapid citywide deployment of these photocatalytic surfaces. Priority areas include busy traffic corridors, bustling markets, and major public spaces where pollution levels are typically high.
**A Comprehensive Environmental Strategy**
This project forms part of Delhi’s year-round strategic environmental action plan aimed at bolstering the city’s defenses against air pollution through technology-driven and scientifically validated interventions.
In addition to the coating trials, the Environment Department has launched an “Innovators’ Challenge,” inviting ideas from students, startups, and experts for fast-track pilots of other innovative technologies. Minister Sirsa highlighted Delhi’s commitment to evaluating and adopting proven photocatalytic technologies with a focus on safety, sustainability, and measurable impact.
