The Delhi government has initiated a feasibility study to explore the use of “smog-eating” coatings on the city’s infrastructure, aiming to combat hazardous air pollutants through science and technology-driven solutions.
Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa announced that the government will investigate the application of photocatalytic surfaces containing titanium dioxide. These coatings can be applied to roads, pavements, and public spaces to help break down harmful pollutants in the air.
### Evaluation Process
Within the next 30 days, the Environment Department is set to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a reputable scientific institution to launch six months of field trials and evaluation. The department will provide monthly updates on the progress, culminating in a comprehensive report detailing the effectiveness and findings at the end of the trial period.
### Pollution Reduction Goals
The study will focus on measuring how effectively the technology reduces pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide and harmful hydrocarbons. Additionally, it will assess the cost-effectiveness, safety, and long-term sustainability of deploying these coatings in the city.
Minister Sirsa emphasized that this initiative represents a practical step toward delivering tangible environmental benefits to Delhi’s residents. “We are putting simple, safe, science-based tools on the ground and measuring results openly,” he said.
### Potential for Expansion
Should the study demonstrate that the “smog-eating” surfaces are effective and economically viable, the department plans to recommend rapid citywide deployment. Priority will be given to high-traffic areas, busy markets, and major public spaces.
The titanium dioxide-based technology is noted for being low-cost, chemically stable, and compatible with traditional construction materials, making it a strong candidate for large-scale urban applications.
### A Comprehensive Environmental Strategy
This initiative is part of Delhi’s year-round strategic environmental action plan, which aims to strengthen the city’s defenses against air pollution through innovative, technology-driven interventions validated by scientific evidence.
Additionally, the Environment Department has launched an “Innovators’ Challenge” to invite ideas from students, startups, and experts for rapid pilot projects on new technologies addressing air quality.
Minister Sirsa concluded that Delhi is committed to evaluating and adopting proven photocatalytic technologies that prioritize safety, sustainability, and measurable environmental impact.
