New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo suffered a gruesome injury during Sunday’s game, leaving fans and players in shock. The rookie’s right ankle twisted grotesquely midway through the second quarter when it caught underneath an Eagles defender during a pass play. His foot turned sharply to the right, resulting in a devastating dislocation.
Officials quickly ruled Skattebo out of the game, and medical staff transported him to a local hospital, the Giants announced on X. Players on both teams immediately recognized the severity of the injury. One Eagles player reportedly ran straight off the field, while several Giants teammates refused to look at Skattebo’s mangled ankle, according to ESPN. Quarterback Jaxson Dart, who shares a close friendship with Skattebo, was heard yelling in frustration as medical personnel placed the running back’s leg in an air cast and loaded him onto a cart.
The Philadelphia crowd showed their respect by standing and applauding the fourth-round pick as he left the field.
Dr. Eric Friedman, a sports injury physician and team doctor for USA Ski & Snowboard, revealed on X that Skattebo suffered a season-ending open tibial fracture. The injury is severe and will require multiple surgeries. If complications do not arise, Skattebo could return by the first week of the 2026 season.
According to the New York Post, Tyrone Tracy Jr., who lost his starting role to Skattebo earlier this season, stayed by his teammate’s side the longest. Before being taken off the field, Skattebo acknowledged supporters by pointing toward them from the cart.
Prior to the injury, the Arizona State product had scored his seventh touchdown of the season on an 18-yard reception from Dart. He entered Sunday’s game leading the Giants with 398 rushing yards. The Giants and their fans will no doubt be hoping for a strong recovery for their promising rookie.
