PHILADELPHIA — New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo was forced to leave Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles with a dislocated right ankle, an injury that could sideline him for the remainder of his rookie season.
Skattebo had to be carted off the field and was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation after sustaining a hard hit over the middle on a pass attempt in the second quarter. He went down in a heap, visibly in pain, and smacked his helmet as he writhed on the turf. His foot appeared twisted, prompting both Giants and Eagles players to gather around the breakout rookie until medical staff could assist him off the field.
The 23-year-old Skattebo, a fourth-round pick out of Arizona State in the 2025 NFL Draft, already had an air cast on his lower right leg when he was driven off the field. Despite the injury, he raised his right arm in appreciation of the ovation from the Eagles crowd. He was officially ruled out for the rest of the game.
Earlier this month, Skattebo showcased his scoring ability with three rushing touchdowns against the Eagles. On Sunday, he had already caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart before his injury occurred.
The sight of Skattebo’s ankle bent unnaturally left Giants players visibly distraught. Many looked away from the scene in shock, while Dart expressed his frustration by turning away, barking expletives, then taking a knee with his head buried in his hand.
Heading into Sunday’s game, the Giants held a 2-5 record, but the performances of Dart and Skattebo had brought renewed optimism to the team. In their previous meeting with the Eagles, Skattebo ran for three touchdowns, while Dart added one rushing and one passing touchdown, helping the Giants secure a 34-17 victory.
Prior to Sunday’s game, Skattebo had accumulated 398 rushing yards and five touchdowns, marking an impressive rookie campaign cut short by this unfortunate injury.
