Mavericks rumors: Why owner still supports Nico Harrison amid fan outrage

The Dallas Mavericks have had considerable reason for optimism since the departure of Luka Dončić back in February. Despite the arrival of Cooper Flagg and a roster that appears stacked with talent, injury issues have resulted in another mixed start for the Mavericks, who are currently 1-2 to begin the season.

In this challenging scenario, fans have consistently called for the front office to fire general manager Nico Harrison. However, he continues to enjoy strong support from owner Patrick Dumont. According to Marc Stein of The Stein Line, Dumont’s backing largely stems from the fact that he was the one who approved the Doncic trade in the first place.

“One source told The Stein Line that Dumont’s support for his GM has stemmed largely from the fact that he’s the one who ultimately signed off on Harrison’s little-known plan to trade Dončić—then 25 and coming off five successive All-NBA first team selections—for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and one unprotected first-round pick in 2029,” Stein explained.

Dallas fans voiced their frustration by chanting “Fire Nico” during a 33-point loss to the San Antonio Spurs and echoed the chant again two nights later in a 10-point home loss to the Washington Wizards. The Spurs game also marked Cooper Flagg’s NBA debut and featured unusually loud “Go Spurs Go” chants inside the American Airlines Center, which Victor Wembanyama said dazzled him postgame.

Adding to the intrigue, Nico Harrison told local reporters in April that he had three seasons left on his contract entering 2025-26, following an extension he signed in June 2024.

The Mavericks’ problematic start has seen the team struggle to score consistently—a challenge Luka Dončić’s presence would have helped alleviate. Further compounding their woes is Kyrie Irving’s absence, leaving the Mavericks without a dependable point guard capable of generating good looks for his teammates.

Looking ahead, Dallas will aim to build on their recent win over the Toronto Raptors when they host the defending champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder, on October 27. Fans will be eager to see if the Mavericks can find stability and begin turning their season around.
