**AI Firm Anthropic Plans to Start Operations in India**

Anthropic, a leading artificial intelligence (AI) company, is gearing up to enter the Indian market as part of its global expansion strategy. This move comes amidst stiff competition from tech giants like OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and Meta. Anthropic is best known for its popular Claude AI models, which have seen rapidly increasing adoption worldwide.
### Expanding Leadership and Regional Presence
Recently, Anthropic raised $13 billion at a post-money valuation of $183 billion, with investment firm Iconiq leading the funding round. The company is actively seeking country leads for India as well as other key regions including Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, and Singapore. This was disclosed by Paul Smith, Chief Commercial Officer at Anthropic, during an interview with CNBC.
### Rapid Global Growth
Anthropic’s Claude AI models have experienced remarkable growth on a global scale. Over the past two years, the company’s customer base has surged from fewer than 1,000 business customers to over 300,000 — a staggering increase of more than 300 times.
In response to this soaring demand outside the United States, Anthropic announced plans to triple its global workforce and expand its applied artificial intelligence team fivefold within the year.
### India: A Major Market for Claude AI
India stands out as the largest market for Anthropic’s Claude AI chatbot outside the US, accounting for 7.2% of the company’s global usage. Despite this, per-capita usage in India remains relatively low, at just 0.27 times relative to the working-age population.
Interestingly, over half of Claude’s usage in India is dedicated to coding tasks, compared to roughly one-third of usage globally. This highlights a strong inclination among Indian users toward leveraging AI for programming and development purposes.
