**What’s the story?**
Yangwang, the luxury sub-brand of Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker BYD, has set a new world record for the fastest production car. The achievement took place at the ATP Automotive Testing Papenburg test track in Germany, where the company’s latest U9 Xtreme hypercar reached an astonishing top speed of 492.22 km/h. This not only breaks BYD’s own previous EV speed benchmark but also surpasses the top speeds of many petrol-powered cars.
**Design Evolution**
So, what’s inside the U9 Xtreme? Previously known as the U9 Track or Special Edition, the U9 Xtreme is a highly refined version of an existing model sold in China. It boasts significant upgrades, including a 1200V ultra-high-voltage electric powertrain, an improvement over the previous 800V system. Powering the car is a lithium iron phosphate Blade Battery with an impressive 30C discharge rate, paired with four ultra-high-speed motors that can reach up to 30,000 rpm. Together, these components generate over 3,000 horsepower, delivering extraordinary performance.
**Collaborative Achievement**
The record-breaking run was piloted by Marc Basseng, a German track specialist with extensive experience in sports-car racing and endurance motorsport. Basseng praised the vehicle’s performance, stating, “Technically, something like this is not possible with a combustion engine.” He also highlighted the electric motor’s quietness, which allowed him to focus more on driving and achieving this incredible speed.
**Exclusive Release**
The U9 Xtreme is now available for customers, albeit in an extremely limited production run of just 30 units. The name “Xtreme” reflects the words “limit” and “ultimate,” with the letter ‘X’ symbolizing the unknown, emphasizing the car’s boundary-pushing capabilities.
Stella Li, BYD’s Executive Vice-President, expressed her pride in the milestone, calling it a proud moment for everyone involved in the company’s research and development efforts.
