**Bhopal Teachers Targeted by Phone Extortion Calls**
More than 100 teachers working in around a dozen government schools in Bhopal have recently received calls from unknown numbers attempting to extort money. The caller impersonates an acquaintance of a school teacher or mentions the name of a colleague, claiming, “I need money. My phone is not working. Transfer money to me and I will get someone to refund it to you.”
A search of the caller’s number on Truecaller reveals the ID as ‘Sir G.’ Many teachers from various government schools have reported receiving such calls. These schools include:
– Government Maharana Pratap Higher Secondary School, Jahangirabad
– Government High School, Arif Nagar
– Government Sultania Higher Secondary School
– Government Higher Secondary School, Putlighar
– Government Higher Secondary School, Hamidia No. 1
– Government Secondary School, Baghfarhat Afza
– Government Higher Secondary School, Jahangirabad
– Government Primary School, Kararia
Teachers have expressed concern that the caller seems to possess all their personal details, including their name, designation, place of posting, and mobile number.
Upendra Kaushal, Acting State President of the Government Teachers’ Association, stated that the data breach likely originated from the Hamare Shikshak app and other applications used by the school education department for recording attendance and handling service matters. He urged the Education Department to take cognizance of these fraudulent calls and implement measures to secure teachers’ online records.
Kaushal also mentioned that the teachers have reported the issue to the District Education Officer (DEO) of Bhopal, who has promised to investigate the matter.
The Government Teachers’ Association emphasizes the need for urgent action to protect educators from such scams and data leaks.
