Actor-politician Kamal Haasan is scheduled to visit Karur today to meet the families of those who tragically lost their lives in the stampede at a public meeting addressed by fellow actor-politician Vijay. The devastating incident, regarded as one of the worst tragedies at a political event in recent Indian history, has claimed at least 41 lives, including several children.
A senior source from Haasan’s party, Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), confirmed the visit to NDTV, stating, “Kamal Haasan will visit Karur and meet those who lost their loved ones around 2:30 pm.”
### Haasan’s Response and Earlier Actions
Prior to today’s visit, Haasan had dispatched party office bearers to console the families of the deceased and visit the injured. He has also urged the Tamil Nadu government to provide adequate compensation for the victims’ families.
### Updates on the Investigation
Actor Vijay, who was at the center of the disaster during his state-wide tour, has yet to visit the grieving families. The police investigation is ongoing, with two Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) functionaries arrested in connection with the incident. Meanwhile, senior TVK leaders Bussy Anand and Nirmal Kumar remain absconding after Madras High Court denied them anticipatory bail.
They face serious charges, including attempt to murder, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and endangering public safety.
### Official Actions Taken
In response to the tragedy, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Inspector General of Police Asra Garg has been formed to probe the incident thoroughly.
Additionally, the Madras High Court reprimanded Vijay for leaving the venue following the tragedy and temporarily banned public meetings and rallies on state and national highways. This ban will remain in effect until a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is established to ensure safety at such events.
### Political Fallout
The disaster has sparked intense political controversy. Vijay has alleged a conspiracy by the ruling DMK party. However, both DMK and the State Police have strongly denied these claims, accusing Vijay of violating safety norms and using the incident to showcase political strength.
In compensation announcements, the state government has offered ₹10 lakh to each victim’s family and ₹1 lakh to the injured. Meanwhile, Vijay has promised ₹20 lakh for the victims’ families and ₹2 lakh for the injured from his party fund.
