Two Indian nationals, Arokkiyasami Daison (23) and Rajendran Mayilarasan (27), were sentenced on Friday, October 3, to five years and one month in prison in Singapore. The duo was found guilty of robbing and assaulting two sex workers during their vacation in the city-state. In addition to the prison term, both were sentenced to receive 12 strokes of the cane.

**Details of the Incident**

The crimes took place on April 26. Arokkiyasami and Rajendran met the victims at their hotel rooms after obtaining their contact information from an unknown man they had encountered earlier.

The first robbery occurred around 6:00 PM in a hotel room where the victims were tied up, slapped, and robbed of jewelry and SGD 2,000 (approximately ₹1.37 lakh). During this incident, the perpetrators also stole passports and bank cards belonging to the victims.

Later that night, the duo committed a second robbery at another hotel. They stole SGD 800 (around ₹55,070), two mobile phones, and a passport from the second victim.

**Arrest and Court Proceedings**

The crimes were uncovered when the second victim confided in another individual, prompting police involvement. Both Arokkiyasami and Rajendran pleaded guilty to voluntarily causing hurt during their trial.

During mitigation, the accused requested leniency from the judge, citing financial difficulties in their home country as motivation for their actions. However, the court ruled based on Singapore’s strict laws, which mandate a minimum of five years’ imprisonment and 12 strokes of the cane for such offenses.

**Conclusion**

This case highlights Singapore’s tough stance on violent crimes, especially those involving robbery and assault. The sentencing serves as a reminder of the severe consequences faced by offenders in the city-state.
