**Doctors at AIIMS Bhopal Successfully Remove Giant Pancreatic Tumour Weighing 4.3 Kilogrammes**
Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): In a remarkable surgical feat, doctors at AIIMS Bhopal have successfully removed a giant pancreatic tumour weighing an astonishing 4.3 kilogrammes. To put this in perspective, a normal adult pancreas typically weighs only between 50 to 125 grams.
The patient had been experiencing non-specific abdominal complaints for over a year but initially attributed her symptoms to common issues like acidity and constipation. She also overlooked the gradual and continuous increase in her abdominal size, which was a significant sign of the underlying condition.
When she finally sought medical attention at the AIIMS Bhopal outpatient department (OPD), doctors discovered a massive tumour occupying her abdomen. Further diagnostic investigations confirmed that the tumour was a rare pancreatic growth, measuring approximately 23 cm—one of the largest pancreatic tumours documented in medical literature.
This giant tumour was obstructing a crucial blood vessel connected to the spleen and caused the formation of gastric varices (a cluster of enlarged veins in the stomach), resulting in a condition called portal hypertension. Due to the involvement of these critical structures, it became necessary to remove the spleen along with the affected left portion of the pancreas during surgery.
The patient was notably thin, and the large size of the tumour posed significant challenges for the surgical team. The tumour filled most of her abdominal cavity, complicating the operation.
Doctors highlighted that certain types of pancreatic tumours are more common in females and often grow slowly. These tumours tend to produce vague and non-specific symptoms, leading many patients to delay seeking medical help. By the time the tumour is diagnosed, it often becomes very large, which complicates treatment and surgery.
This case underscores the importance of early medical consultation for persistent abdominal symptoms and serves as a reminder not to ignore gradual physical changes. The successful removal of this rare and massive tumour marks a significant achievement for the surgical team at AIIMS Bhopal.
