According to a report from Cameron Wolfe of ESPN, the Philadelphia Eagles have expressed interest in Miami Dolphins edge defender Jaelan Phillips. Wolfe, who covered the Dolphins from 2018 to 2021, highlighted Phillips as a notable player with potential despite injury setbacks.
Phillips was selected by the Dolphins in the first round, 18th overall, in the 2021 NFL Draft. Although he was drafted two years before Vic Fangio’s single season as Miami’s defensive coordinator in 2023, Wolfe noted that Fangio did coach Phillips during that year.
Under Fangio’s guidance in 2023, Phillips was having a breakout season, recording 6.5 sacks in just 8 games. Unfortunately, his season was cut short due to a torn Achilles. In 2024, injury woes continued as Phillips tore his ACL, ending his season after only four games.
Injuries have been a recurring challenge for Phillips throughout his career. Coming out of high school, he was a highly touted prospect—ranked No. 2 nationally by 247Sports, No. 3 by ESPN Recruiting, and No. 6 by Rivals. Phillips initially enrolled at UCLA, but multiple injuries and a severe wrist injury from a moped accident impacted his early career. At one point, he even retired from football while in college.
Eventually, Phillips transferred to the University of Miami and made a successful return to football, sitting out the 2019 season per transfer rules. His strong performance in the 2020 college season helped him solidify his position as a first-round NFL draft pick.
Regarding Phillips’ trade value, reporter Dianni Russini shared that the Dolphins are seeking at least a third-round pick in exchange for the edge rusher. She also confirmed the Eagles’ interest in acquiring him.
Phillips is currently playing on his fifth-year option in 2025, which carries a salary of $13,251,000. Any team trading for Phillips would be responsible for roughly half of that amount.
However, if the Dolphins expect a third-round pick for a player who has a career-high of 8.5 sacks but has suffered both Achilles and ACL tears in consecutive seasons—and whose contract only runs through this year—they might be overestimating his market value. A mid-Day 3 draft pick is likely a more realistic price.
