With quarterback Patrick Mahomes sidelined due to a season-ending knee injury suffered in their previous game, the Kansas City Chiefs made a swift roster move. On Saturday, the Chiefs signed former Samford quarterback Chris Oladokun from their practice squad to the active roster. Oladokun will serve as the backup for Gardner Minshew when Kansas City faces the Tennessee Titans at noon CST on Sunday at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee.
Oladokun is entering his fourth season on the Chiefs’ practice squad. Although he has appeared in just one NFL regular-season game, he has already earned two Super Bowl rings as part of the Chiefs organization.
Oladokun began his NFL career as a seventh-round draft pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2022. With the Steelers trying to find a successor to Ben Roethlisberger, Oladokun found himself behind veterans Mitch Trubisky, Mason Rudolph, and 2022 first-round pick Kenny Pickett on the depth chart. He was released early during preseason cuts and soon after picked up by Kansas City for their practice squad.
Before entering the NFL, Oladokun had an extensive college career. He transferred to South Dakota State after stops at South Florida in his hometown of Tampa and Samford University. During his 2019 season at Samford, Oladokun completed 169-of-272 passes for 2,058 yards with 18 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also added 491 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns on 127 carries. In 2020, with Liam Welch taking over as Samford’s starting quarterback, Oladokun completed 37-of-56 passes for 221 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions, while rushing for 26 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries.

In other NFL roster news, another former Samford player made headlines. The Cleveland Browns signed safety Chris Edmonds from their practice squad to the active roster on Sunday, making him eligible to play.
Edmonds played in two games as a rookie with the Browns in 2024 and has appeared in the past six games this season, primarily on special teams, with 107 special-teams snaps and five defensive plays. After being waived from the active roster last week, Edmonds went unclaimed by other teams and was re-signed to the Browns’ practice squad. He was then elevated for Sunday’s game, participating in 21 special-teams plays in Cleveland’s 31-3 loss to the Chicago Bears.
The Browns will take on the Buffalo Bills at noon Sunday at Huntington Bank Field in Orchard Park, New York.
