‘Peninsula Parade of Lights’ returns for 28th year on Saturday, Dec. 6

The “Peninsula Parade of Lights,” a beloved community tradition, will return to Rolling Hills Estates for its 28th year on Saturday, Dec. 6. The parade will feature civic and nonprofit groups, school and youth organizations, marching bands, drill teams, local businesses, holiday floats and, of course, Santa Claus. “One of the main reasons we hold this event is to showcase the unique character of the Peninsula and our very special community here,” said Rosa Pinuelas, Rolling Hills Estates community services supervisor, “and to highlight the commercial district at the start of the holiday season.” Former Major League Baseball player Don Slaught, who attended local schools and spent 16 years in MLB, will be the parade’s grand marshal. Joe Giacomin, of the family owned and operated Martin Chevrolet in Torrance, was honored as “Citizen of the Year” by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce on Nov. 20, and he will also be community grand marshal on Dec. 6. “Our Annual Holiday Parade of Lights brings the Palos Verdes Peninsula together in a meaningful way as we kick off the holiday season,” Mayor Debby Stegura said in a statement. “We’re proud to honor this year’s Grand Marshals for their contributions to the community, and highlight the spirit, tradition, and community that make Rolling Hills Estates such a special place.” The parade will begin at 6 p. m. at Silver Spur Road and Drybank Drive, according to the city’s website; it will then head east on Silver Spur Road to Roxcove Drive, south to Deep Valley Drive, west on Deep Valley Drive, and then continue through the Promenade on the Peninsula to Norris Center Drive. Slaught had a 16-year MLB career as a catcher, playing for the Kansas City Royals, Texas Rangers, New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates, California Angels, Chicago White Sox and San Diego Padres. Slaught grew up on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, and attended Valmonte Elementary, Ridgecrest Intermediate School and Rolling Hills High School, where he was named “Athlete of the Year” in 1976. After retiring from MLB, Slaught coached at Peninsula High School. Slaught founded RightView Pro, “the first video analysis system for baseball and softball licensed by MLB, MLBPA, and NPF, which helped teams win over 20 Division 1 National Championships, 7 World Series titles, and countless other honors,” according to a city press release. Free parking is available at the Town & Country Center, Peninsula Shopping Center and Promenade P|V. Road closures will start at 4 p. m. on the day of the parade at Silver Spur Road and Deep Valley Drive, as well as Roxcove Drive and Drybank Drive.
