**’Muhurat Trading’ for Diwali on October 21: Check Timings**

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) has announced a special ‘Muhurat Trading’ session on the occasion of Diwali this year. The event is scheduled for October 21, from 1:45 PM to 2:45 PM. Unlike previous years when the session was held in the evening, this year’s pre-opening session will take place earlier, between 1:30 PM and 1:45 PM.
### Tradition and Significance of Muhurat Trading
Muhurat Trading marks the beginning of a new Samvat, or Hindu calendar year. It is traditionally believed that trading during this auspicious hour brings prosperity and financial growth to investors and stakeholders. This special session covers multiple market segments including equity, commodity derivatives, currency derivatives, equity futures and options, as well as securities lending and borrowing (SLB).
### Market Closure on Diwali
The stock market will remain closed for regular trading on Diwali, with the exception of this one-hour Muhurat Trading session. All trades executed during this time will carry settlement obligations. Despite the shortened timing, the session is conducted with full formality and is recorded just like any other trading day.
For many investors, participating in Muhurat Trading is considered auspicious. It is a popular time to invest in shares for long-term holding or as part of family rituals celebrating new beginnings and prosperity.
### Historical Market Trends
Historically, Muhurat Trading sessions have delivered positive returns even though trading volumes tend to be low. Over the past 16 years, the market indices have closed in the green on 13 occasions during this special session, underscoring its favorable trend.
Last year, the session ended on a strong note with the Sensex rising by 335 points (0.42%) to close at 79,724, while the Nifty gained 99 points (0.41%) to finish at 24,304.
