Lions QB Jared Goff Makes NFL History Against Giants

The Detroit Lions took on the New York Giants on Sunday, November 23, and it’s a game that was too close for comfort. The Lions trailed the Colts for the majority of the game, and it finally went into overtime, with the Lions capping it off with a 34-27 victory. It shouldn’t have been this difficult, but going into the game, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell knew this could be a closer game than expected. The Giants had a 2-9 record before meeting with Detroit, and the Lions were 6-4, but those numbers don’t tell the whole story. The Giants are under interim head coach Mike Kafka, and he’s been working hard with the team. “I think there was some fresh energy last week when you watched them against Green Bay,” Campbell said before the game. “Sometimes it’s just that newness. Just the change itself, something a little different or a little new can spark you. There was a little bit of that.” He added, “They’ve always played hard, watch the tape, these guys played hard in September, October, early November. But there’s probably a little bit of that, and they had a chance to beat Green Bay.” Jared Goff of the Detroit Lions Makes Franchise History During the game, even before Detroit got the win, quarterback Jared Goff made franchise history. Goff has now thrown for a touchdown in 17-straight games, the second-longest streak in franchise history, according to research from the Lions. This is also the third time in Lions history that a quarterback has thrown a touchdown in each of the first 11 games of a season,” they announced during the game. So, Goff is one of the elite, and he’s certainly one of the best quarterbacks, if not the best, the Lions have had heading up their squad. After the win, the Lions took to X to announce the news, and followers were quick to celebrate and also admit that it was a stressful and close game. “Thanks for the three strokes I had during the game,” one said, hopefully joking. “Shouldn’t have been in that situation, but shows that grit,” another added. “Man, it wasn’t perfect. A lot to clean up. but I’ll take that win,” Campbell said after the game. What This Game Meant to the Detroit Lions As Christian Romo of the Detroit Free Press points out, “Though the game was not mathematically a must-win for the Lions, they need to bank a win against a sub-. 500 opponent after their 16-9 Week 11 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles knocked them out of the top seven in the NFC playoffs.” He adds that the Lions were without starting tight end Sam LaPorta, who’s out for the season, and were also missing three defensive starters for the game: Kerby Joseph, Terrion Arnold and Marcus Davenport. But, cornerback D. J. Reed was back in action, which helped.
