‘Predator: Badlands’ Conquers One of the Greatest Dystopian Thrillers Ever Made at the Box Office

Two full weeks into its theatrical run, Predator: Badlands looks certain to pass the coveted $100 million milestone in the next couple of weeks. It’s already the highest-grossing installment of the iconic sci-fi franchise, which is nearly four decades old at this point and has been in desperate need of an overhaul for years. Thankfully, that’s exactly what director Dan Trachtenberg has delivered, three times over at this stage. He didn’t so much dip his toes in the franchise as he dove headfirst into it with Prey, the acclaimed prequel film that debuted directly on the Hulu streaming service in 2022. Many felt that it deserved a theatrical release, which the studio happily gave to Badlands a couple of weeks ago. Trachtenberg lived up to the confidence shown in him, and delivered a hit that exceeded all box office expectations. With over $75 million domestically and more than $150 million worldwide, Badlands has firmly cemented itself among the 200 highest-grossing sci-fi movies of all time. It has also overtaken a handful of beloved past hits, such as Chronicle, Godzilla Minus One, and Train to Busan. More recently, the film overtook both the domestic and worldwide lifetime hauls of the classic 2006 dystopian hit V for Vendetta, based on the acclaimed comic book series by Alan Moore and David Lloyd. The movie was written by the Wachowskis and directed by their frequent collaborator James McTeigue. Starring Natalie Portman as a young woman who gets involved in an anarchist plot to overthrow an authoritarian government along with a mysterious revolutionary played by Hugo Weaving, the film opened to critical and commercial success in 2006. ‘Predator: Badlands’ Holds a Phenomenal Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes.
