According to the prefectural police, there were 48 mountain accidents reported between July 1st and August 31st, 2025. This figure represents a decrease of 14 incidents compared to the same period in 2024.
Notably, the number of mountaineering deaths fell from seven in 2024 to zero in 2025. This marks the first summer since 2022 without any fatalities related to mountain climbing.
Approximately 70 percent of these mountain accidents involved climbers on Mount Fuji. Authorities believe that the introduction of entry restrictions and mandatory pre-climb learning programs this season helped raise safety awareness among climbers, contributing to the decline in accidents.
In contrast, water-related accidents saw an increase compared to the previous year. There were 25 cases recorded, up by seven, with 12 fatalities—an increase of five from 2024.
