A benches-clearing fight broke out between the Rangers and Red Wings immediately after the final horn rang, following the Blueshirts’ 2-1 home loss on Sunday night.
The altercation began when Detroit forward Mason Appleton shot the puck into the Rangers’ empty net after the game had ended. This action did not sit well with Rangers goalie Jonathan Quick, who had an impressive night stopping 40 of the Red Wings’ 42 shots despite the defeat. Quick immediately went after Appleton in the Rangers’ end of the ice, prompting players from both teams to rush over and escalate the situation into a larger skirmish.
On the scoreboard, Lucas Raymond scored the game-winning goal for Detroit with 3:47 remaining in the third period at Madison Square Garden. Earlier, Mika Zibanejad had tied the score with a power-play goal in the middle of the second period.
The Rangers’ loss snapped their three-game winning streak and has left them struggling at home, where their record now stands at 1-7-1 this season.
