**If ICE or Other Immigration Agents Overstep, Fight Them in Court — Not on the Streets**

If ICE or other immigration agents go out of bounds, the proper place to challenge them is the courts, not the streets. New York politicians—from Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani on down—are courting chaos if they choose to handle the issue otherwise.
Consider City Councilman Shaun Abreu’s recent actions. On Wednesday, he posted an inflammatory video claiming to show Homeland Security officers pulling a migrant out of an SUV in Washington Heights without due process. Abreu described the arrest as “deeply disturbing” and part of a “despicable pattern of intimidation,” asserting that agencies “carrying out [President Donald] Trump’s agenda of detaining people without due process have no place in our city.”
In reality, the individual arrested was Alpha Amadou Diallo, who crossed the border in 2021 and received full due process before a Biden-era immigration judge ordered his removal last year.
“Abreu should stop fearmongering and smearing our brave law enforcement officers, who are facing a 1000% increase in assaults against them and a nearly 8000% rise in death threats,” warned Homeland Security Investigations Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.
Another incident on Wednesday stirred further concerns. NYPD officers, responding to a report of men chasing someone, quickly moved to investigate and intervene if necessary. Upon recognizing the individuals involved were fellow law enforcement agents (plainclothes officers often recognize each other), they assisted in stopping the runner. While some initial reports framed this as a confrontation between federal agents and local police, the incident actually highlighted the critical importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies—something New York’s policies oddly prohibit.
Yet, Mayor-elect Mamdani has promised to resist removals of even violent-criminal illegal immigrants. He calls ICE a “rogue” agency and vows to block them from enforcing immigration laws through deportations, using his mayoral power “to reject Donald Trump’s fascism.”
If officials continue down this path, New York risks fostering disorder rather than maintaining the rule of law.
