Brian Daboll emerges as unexpected “wild card” in $1,200,000,000 CFB program’s coaching search: Report

The New York Giants parted ways with former coach Brian Daboll at the start of the week after a disastrous start to the 2025 NFL season, ending his tenure with the franchise. Although it has been less than a week since his firing, Daboll has already emerged as a “wild card” option for a coaching role at Penn State.

According to The Athletic, “Some former NFL players with strong ties to Penn State have pushed for Daboll to get in the mix.” The $1.2 billion college football program is currently searching for a new head coach following the firing of James Franklin. The report suggests that Daboll has an interest in the job and is expected to receive some consideration, especially given his stint as the offensive coordinator at Alabama in 2017, where he helped lead the team to a national title.

Other strong candidates linked to the Penn State head coaching job include Ohio State offensive coordinator Brian Hartline, Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz, and Georgia Tech head coach Brent Key.

Penn State entered the season ranked No. 2 in the country under Franklin, but the team currently stands at 3-6 and faces the possibility of finishing with a losing record for just the second time in 20 years.

**Reasons Behind Brian Daboll’s Firing from the Giants**

Brian Daboll made a stellar start to his coaching tenure in New York, leading the team to the playoffs and winning the Coach of the Year award. However, he was unable to replicate that success over the next two seasons, with the Giants posting a dismal 5-22 record during that stretch.

This season’s poor 2-8 record ultimately contributed to Daboll’s dismissal. ESPN insider Jordan Raanan noted that Daboll’s underutilization of the young talent on the roster played a significant role in the front office’s decision to move on.

Despite Daboll’s firing, the Giants are maintaining confidence in general manager Joe Schoen, who is heading the search for Daboll’s successor. In the meantime, offensive coordinator Mike Kafka has been named interim head coach following Daboll’s departure.
