Why Josh Giddey’s ankle injury isn’t considered serious

On Monday, the Chicago Bulls were dealt a blow as Josh Giddey was officially ruled out for the upcoming game against the San Antonio Spurs, according to Will Gottlieb of CHGO Bulls. Giddey, who injured his ankle during Saturday’s matchup against the Cleveland Cavaliers, sustained the injury following a massive crossover by De’Andre Hunter, which became a pivotal moment in the Bulls’ 128-122 loss.

Despite the setback, Bulls head coach Billy Donovan remains optimistic about Giddey’s recovery as the team prepares to travel to Detroit for a Wednesday game against the Pistons. Donovan shared, “With what we’ve got coming today and then Detroit, and then there are a few days, I just think he didn’t feel great today, and we’ll see how he feels when we get to Detroit. I don’t think it will be any longer than that after the Detroit game. That is my guess. We don’t feel like it is too severe. Didn’t have much swelling after the game, went some yesterday, and was just uncomfortable today during shoot around.”

This injury represents a temporary setback for Giddey, who has been off to a strong start this season. He is currently averaging 21.4 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 9.3 assists per game. Additionally, this season is critical for Giddey as he aims to prove he is deserving of the four-year, $100 million contract he signed.

With Giddey sidelined, expect second-year guard Matas Buzelis to step up in a big way. Much of the Bulls’ early success, reflected in their 6-3 record, can be attributed to Giddey’s playmaking ability. At the same time, Buzelis has complemented Giddey’s game well, especially when the offensive scheme allows for ball movement and floor spacing. This dynamic has created scoring opportunities for both players, including highlight moments like Giddey dishing the ball to Buzelis for a slam dunk in transition.

Buzelis will be starting against the Spurs on Monday and is poised to take on the primary role in running the offense. He brings quickness, fluidity, and dynamism to the court. Furthermore, Buzelis is capable of shooting from all areas on the floor and attacking the basket aggressively. If he can improve on his defensive consistency, he has the potential to develop into a complete player.

Monday’s game will be a crucial opportunity for Matas Buzelis to demonstrate that he can succeed independently and help keep the Bulls competitive in Giddey’s absence.
