Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Rashod Bateman was fined $25,154 on Saturday for a violation of “verbal abuse of an official.” The incident occurred in the second quarter of the Ravens’ 28-6 victory over the Miami Dolphins last week.
Bateman believed he had been held by a Miami defensive back during the play, which prompted him to direct a short burst of profanity at a nearby official. Although Bateman was flagged on the play for unsportsmanlike conduct, the NFL imposed an additional fine six days later.
He was one of 26 players fined this week. Among them were Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen and wide receiver Elijah Moore, each docked a five-figure amount for a “violent gesture.”
Additionally, Dallas Cowboys running back Rico Dowdle was fined $14,471 for performing the full Hingle McCringleberry. On the bright side, this incident earned him a meet-and-greet with Keegan-Michael Key, the actor from “Key and Peele” who originated the unacceptable gesture.
All of this highlights the NFL’s continued proficiency in extracting charitable contributions from its players. Stay tuned next week to see what the league has in store as the new slate of games unfolds.
