Federal Judge Orders Resumption of Food Stamp Payments Amid Government Shutdown

CHICAGO (WLS) — Forty-two million Americans faced the threat of losing critical food assistance from the government amid the ongoing shutdown.

A federal judge has now ordered the Trump administration to resume making food stamp payments by Monday. However, the White House argues that it cannot legally use federal emergency funds to continue these payments.

Local Support for SNAP Recipients

In response to the situation, several local restaurants in Chicago are offering free meals to SNAP recipients who have lost their benefits.

  • Manny’s Deli in the South Loop is providing a free family meal to customers who show their SNAP Link card through this week.
  • Wooden Paddle restaurants in La Grange and Lemont are offering free lunches to SNAP recipients who present their Illinois Link card.

These community efforts aim to support those impacted during this challenging time.
