The upcoming *Miami Vice* movie is looking to add another huge star to its cast.
*Miami Vice* originally debuted as a crime drama television series created by Anthony Yerkovich and executive-produced by Michael Mann for NBC. Starring Don Johnson as James “Sonny” Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, the show ran for five seasons from 1984 to 1989. The series was later adapted into a 2006 movie directed by Mann, starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx.
Now, F1 director Joseph Kosinski is working on a new reboot film for Universal Pictures, which is expected to arrive in 2026. Nearly a month ago, Nexus Point News first reported that Michael B. Jordan was in talks to star as Rico in the new *Miami Vice* reboot. Yesterday, Deadline confirmed that Jordan had officially been offered the role after the studio adjusted production schedules, allowing him to finish post-production on his directing project *The Thomas Crown Affair* and also shoot the *Miami Vice* film.
So, who else is in talks to join *Miami Vice* alongside Michael B. Jordan?
Deadline is now reporting that Austin Butler is in negotiations to play Sonny Crockett. Although the deal is not yet finalized, Butler’s involvement would be a significant addition. He received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his role in 2022’s *Elvis*. In 2025, Butler is set to star in Ari Aster’s *Eddington* and Darren Aronofsky’s *Caught Stealing*. His filmography also includes titles such as 2009’s *Aliens in the Attic*, 2016’s *Yoga Hosers*, 2019’s *Once Upon a Time in Hollywood*, 2023’s *The Bikeriders*, and the highly anticipated *Dune: Part Two* (2024).
The script for the new *Miami Vice* movie is written by Eric Warren Singer and Dan Gilroy. Joseph Kosinski and Dylan Clark are set to serve as producers. Production is expected to begin in 2026, with the movie slated to hit theaters on August 6, 2027.
