Zoho, the Indian tech giant, is set to enhance the security of its messaging platform, Arattai, by introducing end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for text messages. This announcement was made by Zoho CEO Mani Vembu in an interview with Moneycontrol.

Currently, Arattai offers a “secret chat” option that allows users to enable encryption for private conversations, though this feature is not yet the default setting. Vembu stated, “The entire team is focused on making it available to all users soon,” signaling a major upgrade in the app’s security architecture.

### Addressing Security Concerns

The move to implement encrypted text messaging follows numerous user queries regarding Arattai’s security features. Notably, Zoho has already enabled E2EE for voice and video calls on the platform. With the addition of text message encryption, Arattai will join the ranks of global messaging services like WhatsApp and Signal, which have long emphasized encryption as a fundamental feature.

### A Local Alternative Supporting India’s Digital Sovereignty

Arattai is part of Zoho’s broader initiative to create secure, locally developed alternatives to foreign digital services. Developed in-house, the platform aligns with India’s push for digital sovereignty and enhanced data privacy.

Since its launch in early 2021 as a privacy-focused communication tool for both personal and professional use, Arattai has steadily improved leveraging over two decades of Zoho’s engineering expertise.

### Government Backing and Endorsements

The app’s profile has been boosted by endorsements from prominent Union ministers, including Ashwini Vaishnaw, Dharmendra Pradhan, Nirmala Sitharaman, and Piyush Goyal. They publicly supported Arattai as an indigenous alternative to Big Tech offerings, reinforcing the app’s position in the domestic market.

Zoho’s philosophy prioritizes data sovereignty and user control, hosting all data within India while avoiding ad-based monetization and third-party tracking.

### Commitment to Security and User Trust

Mani Vembu emphasized that despite the growing interest in Arattai, the team remains committed to refining the platform’s core technology rather than rushing updates. He stated, “Security and user trust are at the heart of everything we do.”

Once end-to-end encryption for text chats becomes the default setting, all communication forms on Arattai — including text, voice, and video — will be protected, ensuring that even Zoho cannot access users’ messages.

With this update, Arattai aims to offer a robust, secure alternative for Indian users seeking privacy and control over their digital communications.
