**Wangchuk’s Wife Defends Him, Blames Security Forces for Violence**

Gitanjali Angmo, the wife of jailed activist Sonam Wangchuk, has strongly rejected allegations of financial irregularities and “Pakistan links” leveled against her husband. She emphasized that Wangchuk’s protests advocating for Ladakh’s rights were peaceful in nature and held the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) responsible for escalating the violence on September 24.
The activist was detained under the National Security Act (NSA) following protests demanding Sixth Schedule status and statehood for Ladakh. The demonstrations turned violent, resulting in four deaths and around 90 injuries.
**Angmo Questions CRPF’s Actions**
Angmo questioned the CRPF’s decision to open fire on protesters, asking, “Why would CRPF fire on their own people?” She defended Wangchuk’s role, noting that he was only aware of peaceful protest plans and denied any involvement in non-peaceful activities.
She also asserted that some of Wangchuk’s Ladakhi statements were taken out of context and mistranslated, which fueled misunderstandings about his alleged provocative speech.
**Foreign Visits Were Climate-Focused, Not Anti-National**
Addressing allegations about Wangchuk’s foreign visits, Angmo clarified that these trips were focused on climate issues rather than any anti-national agenda. She highlighted his attendance at a United Nations conference on climate change as evidence of his commitment to environmental causes.
**Financial Allegations and Institutional Integrity**
In response to accusations concerning financial discrepancies involving their institutions, Angmo provided details about HIAL’s foreign funding and strict compliance with all regulations. She firmly denied any wrongdoing and explained that HIAL does not charge fees from students, instead sustaining its operations through innovative projects such as ice stupas.
**Administrative Delays Impacting Institutional Work**
Angmo also criticized administrative delays in land allotment and registration, attributing these setbacks to the Union Territory administration’s lack of appropriate categories for institutions like theirs. She emphasized that these bureaucratic hurdles are not due to any fault of their own but reflect systemic issues.
Following the violence on September 24, the Union Home Ministry canceled SECMOL’s FCRA license, citing alleged financial discrepancies, further complicating the institutional landscape.
