**‘GST Bachat Utsav’ from Tomorrow: PM Modi Announces Price Cuts**

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced the launch of a “GST Bachat Utsav” starting September 22, describing it as a next-generation reform aimed at benefiting consumers across the country. This initiative introduces new Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates, effective from Monday, designed to reduce the cost of daily essentials and stimulate consumption-driven economic growth.
**GST Reforms to Benefit Majority of Goods**
PM Modi highlighted that the GST reforms will impact 99% of goods, which will now fall under the 5% tax slab. He emphasized that simplifying the tax slabs to primarily 5% and 18% would make common goods more affordable for the public. The Prime Minister further explained that these changes are not just about lowering prices but also about creating fresh opportunities for economic expansion across various sectors, including industry, agriculture, and services.
**Focus on Public Welfare: Double Bonanza for the Poor and Neo-Middle Class**
According to PM Modi, these GST reforms have been prioritized for the public good. He remarked that the poor and the neo-middle class stand to gain a “double bonanza” from the tax adjustments. “When the purchasing power of people rises, it benefits every sector, from industry to agriculture to services,” he noted. The Prime Minister added that this reform will touch the lives of every household, enhancing economic well-being across the nation.
**Political Response and Background**
In response to the announcement, the Congress party raised questions about whether PM Modi would comment on recent remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump concerning India-Pakistan relations and the issues faced by H-1B visa holders. However, the Prime Minister’s address focused primarily on the benefits of the GST cuts and presented the government’s economic roadmap.
The current GST rate reductions were initially announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman earlier this month. This move marks the most significant indirect tax reform in India since the GST rollout in July 2017.
