Texans make insurance move amid Ka’imi Fairbairn’s injury

The Houston Texans (3-5) face multiple challenges during a critical November slate, as injuries and inconsistencies continue to test the team’s depth and resilience. The latest setback came when starting quarterback CJ Stroud suffered a concussion, thrusting an already vulnerable offense into a difficult position.

With Stroud sidelined, backup Davis Mills must step in behind a largely unreliable offensive line. The Texans have struggled to manufacture offense even when Stroud was on the field, so scoring points could become an even tougher task. Complicating matters further is the injury status of veteran kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn, whose lower-body ailment has added uncertainty to Houston’s special teams.

In response, the Texans have signed a new kicker. Matthew Wright, 29, is joining Houston’s practice squad, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. This move prepares the team for the possibility that Fairbairn will be unable to compete in Sunday’s home game against the Jacksonville Jaguars (5-3).

Wright has seen action in one game each for the Tennessee Titans and Washington Commanders this season, where he made a 46-yard field goal and converted both of his extra-point attempts. Over the course of his NFL career, Wright has connected on 87.5 percent of his field goal attempts, bringing reliable leg strength to the Texans’ kick game.

Houston will continue to evaluate Fairbairn’s condition before deciding whether Wright will handle kicking duties for the important AFC South showdown. Meanwhile, the team must also monitor Stroud’s recovery closely, as his health will be crucial moving forward.

The Texans have struggled through much of the 2025-26 campaign, leaning heavily on their stifling defense—currently allowing an NFL-best 15.1 points per game—to compensate for their inconsistent offense. DeMeco Ryans’ squad still has time to fight its way into the playoff picture, but a loss within the division would significantly jeopardize those hopes.

Matthew Wright could become a vital component in Houston’s efforts to compete in this pivotal matchup with the Jaguars. He will prepare diligently to be ready if called upon, as the Texans look to overcome their adversity and secure a much-needed victory.
