Huawei has unveiled plans to launch cutting-edge SuperPoD AI clusters, designed to enable its Ascend chips to interconnect at unprecedented high speeds. According to the company’s vice chairman, Eric Xu, the Atlas 950 SuperPoD, featuring support for 8,192 Ascend chips, is scheduled for release in Q4 2026. Its successor, the Atlas 960, will pack a staggering 15,488 Ascend chips and debut in Q4 2027.
These new SuperPoDs promise top-tier performance across several key metrics, including the number of Neural Processing Units (NPUs), total computing power, memory capacity, and interconnect bandwidth, marking a significant leap in AI cluster technology.
**Introducing Large-Scale SuperClusters**
Expanding further, Huawei also announced two large-scale computing clusters: the Atlas 950 SuperCluster and the Atlas 960 SuperCluster. The Atlas 950 SuperCluster will house over 500,000 Ascend processors, while the Atlas 960 SuperCluster will exceed one million Ascend processors. These SuperClusters consist of multiple Huawei SuperPoDs working together and are poised to surpass all existing computing clusters currently available in the market.
Eric Xu emphasized that Huawei’s powerful SuperPoDs and SuperClusters equip the company with the massive computing capacity necessary to accelerate advancements in AI technology rapidly.
**Ascend AI Chips: A Direct Challenge to NVIDIA**
In its push to compete in the global AI chip sector, Huawei revealed plans to launch four new Ascend AI chips over the next three years. The upcoming Ascend 950 chip will incorporate Huawei’s own high-bandwidth memory (HBM), a significant technological breakthrough for China. This move is widely seen as a direct challenge to industry leader NVIDIA.
The development of in-house high-bandwidth memory technology marks a major milestone, as this technology is currently dominated by South Korean giants SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics. Huawei aims to follow a rigorous one-year release cycle for its AI chips, intending to double the compute power with each new generation.
**Strategic Timing Amidst Global Discussions**
Huawei’s announcement comes just ahead of a high-profile meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, underscoring the strategic importance of its advancements in the semiconductor and AI sectors.
With these developments, Huawei is positioning itself as a formidable contender in the global AI hardware race, signaling a new era of competition with established players like NVIDIA.
