Veteran actress Sandhya Shantaram, renowned for her grace, courage, and unforgettable performances in classic Indian cinema, passed away at the age of 87. She was widely remembered for her roles in iconic films such as *Pinjra* and *Navrang*, as well as her memorable appearance in the legendary song “Arre Ja Re Hatt Natkhat.”
Sandhya’s last rites were held on Saturday at Vaikunth Dham, Shivaji Park. Although the exact cause of her death has not been officially disclosed, a source informed India Today that she passed away due to health-related issues.

BJP leader Ashish Shelar took to social media to express his grief over her demise. He wrote, “The news of the passing of Sandhya Shantaram ji, the renowned actress from the film *Pinjra*, is extremely heartbreaking. In the Marathi and Hindi film industries, she left a distinct impression on the audience’s minds with her unparalleled acting and dance skills.”
### Iconic Role in *Navrang*
One of the highlights of Sandhya Shantaram’s illustrious career was her performance in the song “Arre Ja Re Hatt Natkhat” from her husband V. Shantaram’s directorial classic *Navrang* (1959). Notably, Sandhya learned classical dance specifically for this number.
Interestingly, there was no formal choreographer for the song; she and the director developed the dance steps together. To enhance the grandeur of the sequence, real elephants and horses were brought onto the set. Sandhya performed the dance alongside these animals without the use of stunt doubles or tricks, showcasing her dedication and talent.
### Personal and Professional Life
V. Shantaram was already married to actress Jayashree when he fell in love with Sandhya during the making of *Navrang*. Following their marriage, Sandhya became his muse and collaborator, featuring in several of his iconic films such as *Amar Bhoopali*, *Navrang*, *Pinjra*, *Do Aankhen Barah Haath*, and *Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje*.
