Police Blotter: Fatal Walpole Crash, Christmas Day shooting

**Walpole Pedestrian Killed in Crash**

An 83-year-old man was struck and killed while walking in Walpole on Saturday afternoon. According to Norfolk County District Attorney Michael Morrissey, the man—whose identity has not been released—was attempting to cross Washington Street around 1:30 p.m. when he was hit by an SUV.

Emergency responders transported the victim to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the SUV, a 19-year-old woman, remained at the scene, Morrissey said. No charges have been filed at this time. Both the District Attorney’s office and the Walpole Police Department are investigating the incident.

**Boston Police Nab Serial Shoplifting Suspect**

Boston Police arrested a Lowell man suspected of being a serial shoplifter Saturday morning in the Back Bay. Officers responded to a report of possible larceny at Dick’s Sporting Goods on Boylston Street around 11:39 a.m. Upon arrival, officers observed the suspect leaving the store carrying a bag filled with tagged merchandise.

A search of the suspect revealed more than $400 worth of stolen goods, police said. Officers arrested and charged Darrin O’Neil, 60, with larceny under $1,200 and as a common and notorious thief. O’Neil is expected to be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court.

According to authorities, O’Neil had seven active warrants at the time of his arrest, including four counts of larceny from a building, two counts of larceny from a credit card, three counts of receiving stolen property under $1,200, credit card fraud under $1,200, and two counts of shoplifting (one by asportation, another by concealing merchandise).

Earlier this month, the Herald reported that shoplifting arrests in Boston have more than doubled compared to last year, up 260% from the five-year average. Both Boston Police and the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office attributed the increase in arrests to stepped-up enforcement as part of the city’s Safe Shopping Initiative. BPD Commissioner Michael Cox also credited collaboration with retailers and the business community.

“This increased reporting supports Boston Police Department’s ability to address repeat violent and high-volume offenders with the ultimate goal of keeping shoppers and retailers safe,” Cox said at a December press conference on city safety.

**Christmas Day Shooting in Cambridge**

Cambridge Police are investigating a shooting that injured two people on Christmas Day. Officers responded to a report of a fight at a home on Howard Street around 3:20 a.m. Upon arrival, police found two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were transported to local hospitals for treatment.

According to Cambridge Police, the shooting followed an altercation during a gathering at the residence. “This is an isolated incident and there is no broader threat to public safety,” the department said in a statement.
