COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin finished fourth in this year’s Heisman Trophy voting. The prestigious award went to Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza.
While Sayin has aspirations of winning the honor, he went to New York knowing the award would likely go to one of the other candidates. Still, he told reporters earlier this week he planned on enjoying an experience he had dreamed about since watching former Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota win the award in 2014.
“Growing up, I would tell people, ‘Hey, one day I’m going to be in New York for the Heisman ceremony,’” Sayin said. “It’s definitely pretty surreal.”
Sayin has put together a stellar season as a redshirt freshman. In his first campaign as Ohio State’s starter, he’s thrown for 3,323 yards, 31 touchdowns, and six interceptions. His completion percentage of 78.4% leads the country.
A native of Carlsbad, California, Sayin was the nation’s top-rated quarterback in the 2024 recruiting class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. His collegiate career began as an early enrollee at Alabama, but after coach Nick Saban retired in January 2024, Sayin elected to transfer to Ohio State.
He sat behind Will Howard last year before beating out Lincoln Kienholz for the starting job this season.
Sayin led Ohio State to an undefeated regular season. Despite losing to Indiana in the Big Ten Championship Game, the Buckeyes earned a first-round bye in the College Football Playoff as the No. 2 seed. They return to action on December 31 in the Cotton Bowl, where they’ll face either No. 7 Texas A&M or No. 10 Miami.
