Red Sox All-Star Projected To Sign Blockbuster 6-Year, $168M Deal With Mets

The Boston Red Sox need to do everything in their power to improve their roster over the course of this offseason. One of the biggest storylines in Boston this winter is the free agency sweepstakes for veteran infielder Alex Bregman.

Bregman signed a deal with the Red Sox last offseason but opted out of it at the end of the year. He’s projected to land a big deal this offseason, and the Red Sox can’t afford for it to come with a different team.

NBC Sports’ Matthew Pouliot recently predicted that Bregman would leave the Red Sox in free agency in favor of a blockbuster six-year, $168 million deal with the New York Mets.

“It’s pretty great for Bregman that a bunch of contenders are currently in flux at third base. Even the Blue Jays could make room for him if Bichette leaves,” Pouliot wrote. “Or perhaps the Phillies could trade Alec Bohm to open up the hot corner, though they have their own free agents to deal with. Bregman’s floor would seem to be $140 million for five years, with his annual salaries potentially decreasing some if he holds out for a longer deal.”

The Mets are bound to be more desperate than the Red Sox. New York was supposed to be one of the best teams in the league after adding Juan Soto last winter, but it missed the postseason. This winter, adding a talent like Bregman alongside a handful of pitchers could get the Mets back in the postseason.

Money won’t be an issue for the Mets, so a deal like this is completely feasible.
