U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents apprehended 81 individuals on the first day of federal immigration operations in Charlotte, North Carolina, this past Saturday.

Commander Gregory K. Bovino announced the results of the initial day of the operation, dubbed “Charlotte’s Web,” revealing that many of those arrested had significant criminal and immigration histories.

Charlotte is the latest city targeted by the Trump administration as part of its ongoing mass deportation campaign.

### Sanctuary Policies Under Scrutiny

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported that approximately 1,400 Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainers across North Carolina were not being honored due to local sanctuary policies. These policies have allowed many illegal aliens to remain free and continue to move around North Carolina’s streets.

### Local Response

In response to the raids, Democratic Representative Alma Adams (D-N.C.) issued a statement expressing deep concern.

“Charlotte’s immigrant community is a proud part of the Queen City, and I will not stand by and watch my constituents be intimidated or harassed,” Adams said. She criticized tactics reportedly used by border patrol and ICE agents in other cities, such as Chicago and Los Angeles, including excessive force and tear-gassing peaceful protesters.

“These tactics and values have no place in the City of Charlotte or Mecklenburg County,” Adams added in an X post on Thursday.

### CBP Commander Responds

Commander Bovino responded to Adams’s remarks by urging both her and North Carolina Governor Josh Stein (D-N.C.) to “learn the difference between an illegal alien and an immigrant.”

He reassured immigrants, saying, “We have your back like we did in Chicago and Los Angeles.”

### Updates on Arrests

Bovino continued providing updates on arrests made on Sunday, sharing information about recent detentions and the criminal histories of some individuals apprehended.

“Our agents arrested this Honduran illegal alien with a violent criminal history, including multiple simple assaults, shoplifting, and an aggravated felony assault that resulted in four years behind bars,” Bovino wrote in an X post accompanied by a photo of the individual in federal custody. “This is why border security matters. This is why we’re in Charlotte.”

In another instance, Bovino highlighted the arrest of a Honduran national at a local grocery store. The individual has an extensive criminal record, including aggravated assault, assault with a dangerous weapon, and DUI charges. He has also been removed from the U.S. twice previously and committed a felony by re-entering the country.
