Ex-CBP officer sentenced to 15 years in prison in drug trafficking scheme

A former U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for facilitating drug smuggling across the southern border, according to a Thursday release from the Department of Justice (DOJ).

Diego Bonillo, the former officer, was charged with conspiracy to import controlled substances and importation of controlled substances. He allowed smugglers to transport vehicles filled with drugs, undermining border security and federal law enforcement efforts.

The DOJ’s announcement highlights the ongoing challenges faced by border agencies in combating illegal drug trafficking and the critical need for integrity within enforcement ranks. Bonillo’s sentencing serves as a stern warning to those who might consider abusing their official positions for personal gain.
