Data Corner: how governments are supporting research security

On October 28, research Commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva promised to embed research security into EU law. In doing so, she and her team will have plenty of policy initiatives to build on.

According to the latest STIP Compass, a joint project by the European Commission and the OECD for monitoring science, technology, and innovation policies, there are currently 250 research security policies being implemented by governments and research funders across 41 countries.

Research security policies aim to prevent foreign interference, manage risks, and ensure trust in science. These policies are usually part of broader research integrity frameworks and sometimes overlap with them. It is important to note that research integrity policies are tracked separately by the STIP Compass.
