Vice President JD Vance is facing backlash after making fun of New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani’s personal story about his aunt and the September 11 attacks. Mamdani, who is currently leading in the race for mayor, did not hold back in his response to Vance’s comments.
Last Friday, Mamdani gave a speech outside a mosque in the Bronx, where he addressed the issue of Islamophobia. During his speech, he shared a touching story about his late aunt. Following the 2001 terrorist attacks, she stopped riding the subway because she was afraid to wear her hijab in public due to potential discrimination and fear.
JD Vance came across a video of this speech and reposted it on X, adding a mocking comment suggesting that Mamdani was implying his aunt was the “real victim” of 9/11 simply because she received some disapproving looks from people.
According to MSNBC, the very next day Mamdani sat down for an interview with Ayman Mohyeldin, where he strongly criticized the vice president’s remarks. Mamdani stated, “This is all the Republican Party has to offer. Cheap jokes about Islamophobia, so as to not have to recognize what people are living through.” He believes that Vance is deliberately trying to sow division and turn people against each other.
The tensions surrounding Mamdani escalated even before Vance’s comment. Just prior to Mamdani’s Friday speech, another mayoral candidate, former Governor Andrew Cuomo, appeared on a conservative radio show. During the program, the host made a cruel joke insinuating that Mamdani would celebrate if another 9/11 attack occurred, and Cuomo laughed along with the joke.
Mamdani argues that both Cuomo and Vance are employing the same divisive political tactics. He told Mohyeldin, “It does not matter if the attacks come from Vance or Cuomo because they both play the same game. They try to win support by making one group of people afraid of another group.”
He went further to call Cuomo a puppet for Donald Trump, highlighting that both receive backing from the same wealthy donors and share similar political views.
This is not the first time Vance has been involved in heated political exchanges that have drawn public attention. Since Mamdani began running for mayor, he says several candidates have leveraged his Muslim faith to scare voters.
“Whether it’s JD Vance or it’s Andrew Cuomo, it is the same kind of politics,” Mamdani explained. “It’s a politics of division. The reason that I called Andrew Cuomo Donald Trump’s puppet is not just because they share the same billionaire donors. It’s not just because they see themselves in each other. It’s also because their vision of leading a city, or a country, is one where you are only able to build a constituency by pitting it against another one, and that’s what we’re seeing in this moment.”
Mamdani emphasized that these incidents shed light on the challenges Muslims in New York City face daily. He stressed the importance of calling out racism whenever it appears rather than accepting it as normal.
“If people stop being shocked by this kind of hate, then they are basically saying it is okay, and I will never agree with that,” Mamdani told the interviewer.
The candidate concluded by pointing out that Islamophobia has become so ingrained in city politics that it is now difficult to determine which political party the hate is coming from.

This controversy highlights growing concerns about divisive tactics in politics and the need for greater awareness and respect toward minority communities. As the mayoral race continues, Mamdani’s experiences serve as a reminder of the barriers many face and the importance of confronting prejudice head-on.
