The Oklahoma Sooners experienced a tough 34-26 loss to the Ole Miss Rebels in Week 9 on Saturday. Although it was a close contest, the Sooners saw the biggest drop in the AP Top 25 poll following the game.
Oklahoma entered Week 9 ranked No. 13 in the nation. However, after the loss, the Sooners fell to No. 18, dropping five spots—the largest movement among any Top 25 team this week. Despite the significant drop, head coach Brent Venables and the Sooners remain the third-highest-ranked team with two losses. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish (5-2) hold the No. 12 spot, while the Tennessee Volunteers (6-2) are ranked No. 14.
The loss to Ole Miss was a hard-fought battle. Oklahoma held a narrow 26-25 lead entering the fourth quarter. Unfortunately for the Sooners, the Rebels rallied and scored nine unanswered points in the final quarter to seal the win.
Quarterback John Mateer put in a solid performance, throwing for 223 yards and one touchdown while completing 54.8% of his passes. Running back Xavier Robinson proved to be a reliable weapon on the ground, finishing with 109 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just nine carries.
Wide receiver Isaiah Sategna was the biggest beneficiary of Mateer’s play, recording 131 receiving yards and catching the Sooners’ only touchdown reception of the game.
Looking ahead, the Sooners will have a chance to climb back up the rankings in Week 10 when they face the No. 14 Tennessee Volunteers. The road to the College Football Playoff remains challenging, especially with Oklahoma set to play against ranked opponents in four of their final regular-season games.
