Game Mode Limitations

Before diving into the action, it’s important to be aware of two main limitations in Marvel Zombies mode:

  • Player Limit: The mode only allows up to 4 players per team. If you have a larger group, some players will unfortunately have to sit this one out.
  • Hero Restrictions: You cannot use every Hero in the game. Currently, your hero options are limited to Punisher, Magik, Thor, Blade, and Jeff the Land Shark. Unlike normal Rivals matches, duplicate Heroes are allowed on the same team.

These limitations might not be dealbreakers for most players, but we wanted to highlight them as a heads-up before you jump in.

Gameplay Basics

When starting Marvel Zombies, you’ll first encounter the difficulty selection screen. The mode features multiple difficulty levels, ranging from Normal (easiest) up to Nightmare IV (hardest).

Higher difficulty levels unlock sequentially as you successfully complete the previous difficulty.

Once you start a match, you’ll see the Khonshu’s Blessings shop. This shop allows you to purchase upgrades using a special in-match currency called Moon Power. You begin each match with 10 Moon Power, and can earn more as you progress.

Upgrades vary in strength and cost more Moon Power if they are stronger. There are general blessings available for every Hero, as well as Hero-specific blessings. Choosing the right blessings will help you survive and thrive against the zombie hordes!

Match Progression

In the Normal, Hard, and Extreme difficulties, progression follows a linear path marked by arrows on the map. You’ll reach checkpoints where you have to clear waves of zombies. Clearing these waves will also allow you to purchase additional Khonshu’s Blessings upgrades.

Eventually, you will face two boss battles:

  • Zombie Namor (Wave 5): Namor behaves similarly to his usual Hero form, flying around and summoning squid turrets. Your top priority should be to destroy these squid turrets—they can overwhelm your team and shield Namor from damage. Taking out the turrets weakens his shield, allowing you to deal direct damage and defeat him.
  • Queen of the Dead Scarlet Witch (Wave 9): This boss is a tougher version of Scarlet Witch. She summons Dark Seal force fields that can stun you and your teammates. Avoid these areas! She also uses Chaos Control to deal area damage and employs Sorcery Surge to focus attacks on single targets sporadically. When her health is low, she places crystals around herself and prepares a powerful attack—destroy these crystals quickly to prevent being wiped out.

Survive both boss battles and you’ll have successfully completed the match!

Nightmare Mode Differences

The Nightmare I to IV difficulties differ slightly from the lower levels. Instead of progressing through a linear map, your team will face increasingly difficult waves in a fixed arena setting.

In Nightmare mode, the gameplay is entirely wave-based. Stand your ground against endless zombies, purchase upgrades after each wave to become stronger, and prepare to defeat bosses at Wave 5 and Wave 10. The core experience remains similar—it’s just more intense and focused on survival.

Time to Power Up!

Between matches, you can further strengthen your team by clicking on Prepare. This screen shows all playable characters and allows you to purchase Traits for them.

As you play Marvel Zombies, you earn EXP and level up your Mode Level. This unlocks higher-level Traits that provide more powerful benefits. You’ll need Trait Points to unlock these Traits, which you gain as you level up in the mode.

If you want to try different builds, you can reset your Traits at any time without penalty.

Extra Help: Holy Ankhs

You can also obtain Holy Ankhs which allow you to revive fallen players mid-match. Logging in daily grants you 3 free Holy Ankhs—be sure to claim these to increase your team’s chances of survival.

If you want more, you can purchase 10 Holy Ankhs for 100 Units. However, we don’t recommend spending Units on them unless you really need to.

Get Out There and Slay Those Zombies!

That’s everything you need to know about the new zombie mode in Marvel Rivals! Assemble your team, choose your Heroes and blessings wisely, and take on the undead hordes for exciting rewards. Good luck, and have fun surviving the Marvel Zombies invasion!
