Rebuilding Gaza will take ‘decades’, cost $70B, experts say

With a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas now in effect, many questions remain about the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip. According to an expert from the Brookings Institution, rebuilding Gaza could take decades rather than just years due to the massive destruction sustained.

Under the terms of the ceasefire agreement, the Gaza Strip is set to be redeveloped for the Palestinian people. Jaco Cilliers, an official from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), shared at a press conference on Tuesday that the agency had already cleared approximately 81,000 tons of rubble from the area and continues to work on debris removal.

However, uncertainty surrounds when the reconstruction will officially begin and who will ultimately finance the extensive rebuilding effort. Hady Amr, a Brookings Institution expert and former U.S. representative for Palestinian affairs from 2022 until 2025, spoke to ABC News about the challenges ahead.

“I don’t think there’s any modern comparison to what’s going to need to happen in the Gaza Strip right now. The level of destruction and devastation is just absolutely immense,” Amr explained. “Imagine not…”
