LEXINGTON, Ky. — Mason Shipley kicked a 45-yard field goal in overtime to lift No. 21 Texas to a 16-13 victory over Kentucky on Saturday night, despite a sub-par outing from quarterback Arch Manning and a struggling Longhorns defense.
Shipley also nailed a 39-yard field goal with just a minute remaining in regulation, giving Texas (5-2, 2-1 Southeastern Conference) a 13-10 lead. However, Kentucky (2-4, 0-4 SEC) answered back, tying the game at 13-all on Jacob Kauwe’s 45-yard field goal with 9 seconds left, sending the contest into overtime.
Texas managed only 179 total yards but capitalized on two crucial punt returns by Ryan Niblett to fend off the Wildcats. Niblett’s 43-yard punt return in the fourth quarter set up Shipley’s late field goal attempt. Earlier, Shipley connected on a 53-yard field goal in the third quarter.
Quarterback Arch Manning threw for 132 yards for the Longhorns, while running back Quintrevion Wisner scored Texas’ lone touchdown in the second quarter. Kentucky’s defense stifled Texas in the first half, limiting them to just 93 total yards.
Texas’ sole touchdown came following Niblett’s 45-yard punt return on a fumble recovery by DJ Campbell in the end zone with 6:22 remaining in the first half.
Trailing 10-3 in the fourth quarter, Kentucky tied the game on quarterback Cutter Boley’s 16-yard run with 12:04 remaining. Boley finished with 258 passing yards and added 27 rushing yards, helping the Wildcats total 395 offensive yards—more than double Texas’ output.
