Bradley Whitford recently opened up about his role in the new season of *The Diplomat* on Netflix, sharing insights into reuniting with his *West Wing* co-star Allison Janney. The two portray the First Couple of the United States, navigating a complex marriage that deeply shapes the show’s dynamic.
Speaking on *Live with Kelly and Mark*, Whitford jokingly referred to his character Todd as “the first lady,” highlighting that the couple’s relationship “seems complicated.” He elaborated that Todd “loves [his wife on the show] and is protective of her,” and enjoyed portraying the mix of affection and frustration present in their marriage.
In an interview with *Radio Times*, Whitford expressed that he was “beyond thrilled” when showrunner Debora Cahn offered him the role opposite Janney. He called it “an exquisite privilege” to work with her again, reflecting on their shared history from *The West Wing*.
Allison Janney, who plays President Grace Penn, told *TVLine* that their real-life connection contributed “a certain real comfortability” to their on-screen dynamic. This familiarity helped them bring depth to their scenes as a long-married couple navigating the challenges of political life.
Todd’s new position as the President’s husband places him in an uneasy spot. Showrunner Debora Cahn described him as someone who “really wants to be supportive” but finds “the actual process of supporting to be so devastatingly painful.” Similarly, Keri Russell, who plays Kate Wyler, noted that Todd “wants” to support Grace but “is bad at it.”
Whitford confirmed that Todd’s career as a biology professor has been “put on hold,” hinting that his backstory will be explored further in the upcoming season. Although he remains “protective” of his wife, Todd is “obviously openly grumpy about being put in this position,” Whitford added.
*The Diplomat* Season 3 premieres on Netflix on October 16, continuing directly after the Season 2 finale. As Janney’s Grace Penn steps into the presidency, Whitford’s Todd adjusts to his new role as the First Gentleman.
