West Indies fast bowler Jayden Seales has opened up about his ambitions in Test cricket. The 24-year-old, who made his international debut at 19, revealed his goal to “build my name” and “a legacy” in the sport. Seales also expressed a strong desire to become the number one player in Test cricket.
### Overcoming Challenges: The Toughest Phase of His Career
In an interview with *The Cricket Monthly* from ESPNcricinfo, Seales reflected on the most difficult period of his career—undergoing knee surgery in 2022. He shared how upset and confused he felt when he learned he would be sidelined for six months. The recovery process involved seven weeks on crutches and four-and-a-half months of therapy. “I felt like I would’ve gotten a lot better faster and probably done better back then,” he admitted.
### Cricket Lineage and Debut
Seales made his Test debut against South Africa in June 2021. Although initially anxious about the match, his nerves were calmed by West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite, who decided not to give him the new ball. Coming from a cricketing family, Seales has strong roots in the game—his grandfather, uncles, and father have all played cricket at various levels.
### Aspirations to Become the Best
With an impressive tally of 88 Test wickets at an average of 22.33, Seales is determined to be remembered as one of the best West Indian bowlers. “I would keep working on, keep getting better in my game to end up one day as No. 1 in the world and to be in that conversation with the West Indies legends and to leave a good legacy for myself when I’m finished,” he said.
### Bowling Technique and Inspiration
Seales is known for his unique bowling action, which involves an 84-foot run-up and a rhythm-based approach. While he doesn’t generate much air speed, he creates pace off the pitch, sometimes producing awkward bounce for batsmen. His father played a key role in shaping his style, showing him classic clips of West Indies legends like Sir Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh.
### Career Milestones
Seales achieved his first five-wicket haul against Pakistan in Jamaica. Despite taking three wickets in the first innings, he also experienced a costly spell with an economy rate of 4.37. Currently, he holds the 12th spot in the ICC Test bowling rankings.
Committed to Test cricket, Seales has secured multi-year contracts with Cricket West Indies, choosing to focus on the longest format despite the growing allure of T20 leagues.
