Heavy rains lash parts of Delhi, chokes traffic

Heavy traffic snarls were reported across Delhi on Tuesday following persistent rainfall, causing significant disruption for commuters. Social media was flooded with updates of gridlocks, particularly near Tikona Park close to Jamia Millia Islamia, and a 25-minute jam on the flyover near the Radisson Hotel on NH-48, affecting those traveling from Delhi to Gurugram.

Northwest Delhi also experienced slow-moving traffic, with areas around Netaji Subhash Place in Pitampura and major stretches of the Outer Ring Road witnessing congestion, according to the Press Trust of India (PTI). While the rainfall brought some relief from the recent muggy weather, it unfortunately compounded travel issues throughout the city.

In South Delhi, busy roads such as Mahatma Gandhi Road, NH-48, and Captain Gaur Marg from Lajpat Nagar suffered severe traffic jams. Commuters reported bumper-to-bumper movement on Mathura Road, Old Rohtak Road, parts of ITO, and the stretch from Mahatma Gandhi Road to GT Karnal Road.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the maximum temperature on Tuesday was expected to settle around 35 degrees Celsius, which is 5.4 degrees above normal, while the minimum temperature was recorded at 28.7 degrees Celsius. Relative humidity stood at 74 percent at 8:30 am. The IMD forecasted a generally cloudy sky with light rain or drizzle throughout the day.

Delhi’s air quality index (AQI) was recorded at 114 at 8 am, placing it in the moderate category, based on data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

In response to the worsening traffic conditions and waterlogged roads, Delhi traffic police advised commuters to plan their journeys in advance and avoid affected areas wherever possible, as reported by PTI.

Meanwhile, adverse weather also impacted flight operations at the Delhi airport. At least five flights scheduled to land between 12:15 pm and 12:30 pm were diverted to Jaipur due to persistent rainfall and thunderstorms affecting the national capital, an official stated.

IndiGo, one of the major airlines, posted on X (formerly Twitter) at 12:49 pm: “Persistent rainfall and thunderstorms are currently affecting Delhi, leading to possible delays in flight operations. Our teams are closely monitoring the situation to ensure your journey resumes as soon as conditions improve.”

Heavy rains continue to affect Delhi-NCR, with advisories issued by airlines about potential disruptions in flight schedules as the weather situation evolves.
