A tragic stampede at actor-politician Vijay’s rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, has claimed 39 lives and left over 100 people injured. The incident has led the Tamil Nadu government to tighten security around Vijay’s Chennai residence amid fears of public anger, according to NDTV sources.
### Mismanagement and Violation of Guidelines
The DMK-led state government has criticized Vijay for violating event guidelines, which they say contributed to the tragedy. Reports reveal significant mismanagement by rally organizers, who failed to provide basic amenities such as drinking water and food. This lack of provisions caused many attendees to faint under the scorching sun.
Adding to the chaos, Vijay arrived at the venue more than seven hours late. His supporters reportedly breached police protocols by closely following his vehicle, further exacerbating the situation.
### Emergency Access Controversy
Disturbingly, even as people collapsed during Vijay’s speech, ambulances were reportedly denied access to the rally site. After the event, Vijay departed for Trichy airport and flew to Chennai via a private flight.
In response, a TVK advocate defended the party, claiming that all police guidelines had been adhered to and expressed deep sorrow over the incident’s impact on Vijay.
### Official Responses and Condolences
Vijay took to X (formerly Twitter) expressing profound grief, stating he was “writhing in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow.” He extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for the swift recovery of the injured.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin personally visited the hospital to meet with victims and their families, showing solidarity with those affected.
### Legal Action and Judicial Inquiry
Legal proceedings have been initiated against TVK’s Karur West district secretary, V.P. Mathiyazhagan, for allegedly violating safety norms during the rally. Additionally, the state government has ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident, appointing a retired High Court judge to lead it.
Tamil Nadu’s Director General of Police, G. Venkataraman, noted that permission for the rally was granted for 3 PM to 10 PM. However, the crowd began assembling as early as 11 AM, and attendees suffered due to insufficient food and water in the intense heat.
