The Manipur police have made a significant breakthrough in the investigation of the September 19 ambush that resulted in the deaths of two Assam Rifles personnel. The attack took place in Nambol, Bishnupur district, targeting a convoy of the 33 Assam Rifles. Sadly, Naib Subedar Shyam Gurung and Rifleman Ranjit Singh Kashyap lost their lives, and five others sustained injuries.
### Arrest of Prime Suspect
Authorities arrested the prime accused, Khomdram Ojit Singh alias Keilal (47), during a joint operation conducted by the Imphal West District Police, Bishnupur Police, 33 Assam Rifles, and other security forces. The operation was launched around 1:00 AM on Wednesday in the Kameng area of Imphal West district, based on specific intelligence inputs about armed militants in the region.
Singh is an active member of the banned People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and was out on bail after being previously arrested on April 22, 2007.
### Confession and Recovery of Weapons
During interrogation, Singh reportedly confessed to his role in the ambush. He revealed that he and his accomplices fled toward Loktak Lake following the attack and concealed their weapons in a secret location. Acting on this information, security forces recovered a large cache of arms and ammunition, including:
– One A4 rifle
– Two AK rifles
– One INSAS rifle
– Three lathode shells
– 216 rounds of M-16 ammunition
– 67 rounds of INSAS ammunition
– A handset, wallet, and an Aadhaar card
### Investigation Ongoing
Singh is currently undergoing further interrogation. The police have identified additional suspects linked to the ambush, and follow-up operations are underway to apprehend all involved parties. The Manipur Police Headquarters has affirmed that security operations will continue relentlessly until all perpetrators are brought to justice.
This attack occurred shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Manipur on September 13, his first since violence erupted in the region in May 2023.
