Big halftime lead comes in handy for Knights in win vs. Mount Zion

A timely reminder-to not take its proverbial foot off the gas-popped up for the Greenfield School varsity boys basketball team in its first home game in 10 days Tuesday evening, Nov. 25, a 77-70 victory over Mount Zion Christian Academy of Durham. The NCISAA 2-A Knights (5-1) led by 10 points after one quarter and were up by 22 at halftime before the Mighty Warriors (2-4) outscored them 49-34 in the second half. The negative turnaround was a litte concerning for Greenfield Hall-of-Fame head coach Rob Salter, especially after a solid showing at the Virginia Tip-Off last weekend against high-level teams from Virginia and Maryland. Greenfield has another early-season showdown Saturday against traditional fellow NCISAA 2-A power The Burlington School. The game is part of Hoop State’s Hoopsgiving showcase at Shaw University in Raleigh. “The first half, I thought we sped them up well,” Salter said. “I thought we got out in transition. I thought we guarded solid. Second half, we just thought we would roll over them, and we quit guarding people. We made careless turnovers, and we quit being us. You know, that’s kind of our motto all year, to be us, and we were not us in the second half. But we can’t play that way Saturday. We play that way Saturday, (like we did) in the second half, we’ll get our tails beat.” The Knights got off to a rousing start with nine 3-pointers in the first half. Junior Johnny Winborne, who lead the team with 22 points, canned all six of his treys in the first two quarters. Donovan Dickens, who finished with 13 points, and sophomore Braxten DuBose each splashed two 3-pointers. DuBose had a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds while senior point guard Kobe Edwards, who has signed with NCAA Division I Elon University, had 15 points and 10 assists. Sophomore Cameron Moore added 11 points for the Knights. Despite the second-half letdown, Salter was pleased with some things he saw from his team early in the game. “We can be really good defensively,” he said. “We have been until the second half tonight. We were just very undisciplined in the second half, but we do a pretty good job of keeping the ball in front of us, and that leaves the offense a lot. We’re a whole lot better in transition than we are in half court.” Score by quarters: MZCA 10 11 22 27 70 GFS 20 23 15 19.
