Athens breathes a sigh of relief on a day without cars

The normally traffic-clogged streets of central Athens breathed a sigh of relief on Sunday, September 21, as the city celebrated World Car-Free Day with a 24-hour, car-free extravaganza titled **Athens Without a Car 2025**.

A traffic ban in the city centre, enforced until 10pm, transformed bustling roads into vibrant spaces for community engagement, music, and eco-friendly activities, much to the delight of residents.

The day kicked off with the De Profundis Ensemble orchestra serenading crowds with timeless classical music. Meanwhile, Municipal Advisor Artemis Skoubourdi led a guided walking tour along Athinas Street, recounting tales of the historic buildings that line the iconic thoroughfare.

From 11am to 5pm, the streets buzzed with family-friendly activities. Children flocked to a traffic education workshop, balance bike races, and a bike art painting session, where both kids and adults created colourful masterpieces using bicycles. Face painting, storytelling, and experiential activities kept the young ones entertained throughout the day.

Adding to the lively atmosphere, DJs from Athens radio stations kept the energy high with eclectic playlists. Adventurous attendees tried skating and rollerblading lessons or competed in a slow-motion bike race, balancing their way to victory without touching the ground. In a fun twist, the last person to cross the finish line won the race.

The celebration culminated in an electrifying concert by Locomondo, one of Greece’s most loved bands. Their performance transformed the car-free streets into a massive dance floor, closing the event with an unforgettable party under the Athenian sky.

The day’s success highlighted the city’s commitment to sustainable living and community connection, leaving residents eager for next year’s festivities.
