Preliminary 3.8 earthquake strikes near San Ramon, followed by several possible aftershocks: USGS

SAN RAMON, Calif. (KGO) — A preliminary magnitude 3.8 earthquake struck near San Ramon Sunday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The initial quake was reported just after 9:38 a.m.

Following this, three more small earthquakes occurred in the area within minutes: a 3.7 magnitude quake at 9:39 a.m., a 3.0 magnitude jolt at 9:41 a.m., and a 2.9 magnitude tremor also at 9:41 a.m. The first quake was later upgraded from a magnitude 3.7 to 3.8.

This recent activity comes two months after a 4.3 magnitude earthquake centered in Berkeley shook the Bay Area on September 22. That event was followed by a 3.1 magnitude earthquake on October 16, also in Berkeley.

Seismologists continue to monitor the region closely. Although stress continues to build on the Hayward Fault, experts say the probability of a major “big one” earthquake remains low.
